Established in 1928 by the Young Men's Business League (YMBL), the Sunshine Camps have been providing a safe and nurturing environment for the disadvantaged boys and girls of Central Texas for almost eighty years. Camp organizers work with the children to develop the tools necessary to overcome the variety of difficulties they face in their day-to-day lives.
The children are assailed on all fronts from challenges of poverty and family disintegration to the threats of drug and violence. ASC's ultimate goal is to eliminate the high school dropout rate among the at-risk youths they target increase college participation by these same young men and women to help break the poverty cycle that so often circumscribes the life chances of this often overlooked group.
To accomplish these goals, all five YMBL programs are offered free of charge to almost 1,000 kids per year. The two summer camp programs offered are the Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps at Zilker Park, which serves kids ages 7-11 in a weeklong overnight camping experience, and the Austin YMBL Sunshine Camp at Lake Travis, which is a weeklong overnight adventure style camping experience for ages 12-15.
The year-around programs are The Challenge Program, a revolving 2-year program for 7th & 8th graders, is an endeavor to capture a greater number of young men and women at a crucial life intersection and set them on the path to personal achievement through positive intellectual and interpersonal development.
This program will move students from the helplessness they may currently feel to the accomplishments possible through high-school completion, college enrollment, and a commitment to positive social contributions. The Leadership Program is designed for high-school aged students.
The course brings the selected Sunshine attendees together throughout the academic year for weekly tutoring sessions and various workshops that address study skills, test taking strategies, money management, and a host of other issues this age group deals with not only on a daily basis but throughout their lives. The last program offered is the scholarship program for college bound Leadership Students. This program is funded and managed by the YMBL. [website...]
